US Delegation, Led by Pelosi and McCaul, Meets Dalai Lama in Dharamshala

Dharamshala, 19th June 2024: A delegation from the United States, led by former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Republican chair of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul, visited the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama in Dharamshala. Pelosi reflected on her past trip to Tibet, where she witnessed efforts by the Chinese government to suppress Tibetan culture by restricting the use of the Tibetan language.

During the meeting, Pelosi underscored the significance of the recently passed legislation known as the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’, which reaffirms America’s stance on Tibet. She recounted a conversation with the President of China during his visit to Washington, DC, where she expressed concerns about Chinese policies affecting Tibetan culture. Pelosi emphasized the importance of the legislation in sending a clear message to China regarding US support for Tibet.

Deputy Speaker Dolma Tsering Teykhang of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile highlighted the symbolic support conveyed by the US lawmakers’ visit, emphasizing solidarity for human rights and freedom, not only for Tibet but for all who aspire to these principles. Teykhang noted China’s displeasure with supporters of Tibet but affirmed the delegation’s commitment to a just cause.

Recently, the US Congress passed the ‘Resolve Tibet Act’, urging China to engage in peaceful dialogue with Tibetan leaders, rejecting Beijing’s historical claims and misinformation about Tibetan culture. Pelosi, upon arriving in Dharamshala, expressed enthusiasm about the visit, while McCaul confirmed President Biden’s intent to sign the legislation.

In response, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed serious concern over the visit, urging the US to recognize the Dalai Lama’s alleged separatist activities. China contends that the Dalai Lama is not solely a religious figure but also a political exile involved in anti-China activities.
